According to sources, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss scolded Russia’s envoy on Thursday over his country’s invasion of Ukraine, branding Russia a “world pariah” before booting him out of the meeting, according to reports.
According to an official statement from her department, Truss summoned Russian Ambassador Andrei Kelin in response to what she described as Russia’s “unprovoked and unlawful attack on Ukraine.”
She informed him that Moscow had “repeatedly lied about having no plans to invade Ukraine, and (that) its unprovoked aggression had turned it into a worldwide pariah,” according to her.
According to her, Western sanctions would have a negative impact on the Russian economy, and Moscow “should prepare for a long, protracted conflict that would inflict a significant human, economic, and political cost on the Russian government,” according to a statement from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
During what one FCDO source characterized as a “very unpleasant meeting,” Truss blasted Russia’s “outrageous attack on Ukraine as a flagrant violation of international law.”
According to the source, the minister “kicked (Kelin) out after he began repeating the Kremlin’s ludicrous propaganda lines,” which led to his dismissal.
