Former health minister, Zweli Mkhize who resigned following his corruption scandal is being pressured by eThekwini region to contest president Cyril Ramaphosa at the party’s 55th conference in December.
eThekwini region is one of the influential regions in the province and has revealed that it is rallying behind the corruption accused Zweli Mkhize for ANC presidency.
Bheki Ntuli the eThekwini region convenor said the region wields so much power and implied that the strength and influence of the branch had previously been useful in Polokwane when former president Jacob Zuma was elected.
“When it’s time to elect leaders, this is one of the wards usually leading. I would like that even today we don’t end in speeches at the podium,” he said.
There however seem to be confusion taking place among the ANC RET comrades as so far there have been numerous names brought forward for ANC presidency.
Former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla once argued that if the RET forces are not united and have so many candidates competing for one positions, it will compromise them and give Cyril Ramaphosa a fair chance to win.
Previously, some comrades were said to be rallying behind former Umkhonto Wesizwe Military Veterans Association comrade, and tourism minister, Lindiwe Sisulu for presidency, but it later emerged that some comrades had not endorsed her.
On the hand, some RET forces are rallying behind Ace Magashule whom they think stands a better chance to win against Cyril Ramaphosa at December’s conference.
It seems also that several comrades being endorsed to contest against Cyril Ramaphosa have corruption scandals hanging over their names except for minister Lindiwe Sisulu.
What has been speculated however is that, even those comrades who are facing corruption charges stands a chance to compete at the national conference in December as they will not be bound by their charges as long as branches nominate them.
