The columnist journalist, Mark Barnes, has decried the high level of corruption in South Africa, declaring that “corruption is a virus in our blood”. The prolific writer lamented how corruption has tarnished the society, declaring that no sector of the economy is left out of this societal ill. He disclosed that corruption is almost bringing the once striving economy of South Africa down on its knees, saying that the earlier the government take action against corruption, the better for the nation. However, the most painful aspect is that even those who will take responsibility to ensure that corruption is eradicated are also involved in this ungodly practices. He further wrote, “Corruption has become common law the way things are done around here; the rules of play. In fact, is it not the way to get anything done at all? An outsider reporting on the goings-on in our economic ecosystem could be forgiven for concluding that corruption is just a way of life here in sunny SA…”
The high level of corruption in South Africa is being laid bare by the state capture report that are being released in batches or parts. Yesterday, the well-known businessman, Hamilton Ndlovu said that he is going to mention names in the infamous PPE scandal and fund mismanagement during the peak of Coronavirus. This single corruption or fund mismanagement saw the government losing several billions of rand to what have now been called “tenderprenuers”. Of course, Mr Hamilton Ndlovu is one of the principals accused in the PPE graft. He already said that he will mention names because he will not go down alone, or suffer for others to be free. Mark Barnes revealed the level of corruption in this country is sickening altogether.
The Journalist further cried that the so-called Government’s efforts in fighting corruption is not generating any tangible result that will make the people confident that corruption is being fought, or the perpetrators are being prosecuted. Many people have argued that corruption is rampant because the perpetrators know that they will go score free if caught as long as they remain loyal to the government in power.
