Former military officer among eight suspects killed during shoot-out with police in Rosettenville.

After a cash-in-transit theft was stopped in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, on Monday, police engaged the suspects in a shootout with them, which resulted in the deaths of eight people, a former South African military commander.

It was revealed on Tuesday by the Independent Police Directorate (Ipid) that several police units and forces had received information about individuals who were intending to perpetrate a cash-in-transit theft somewhere in Johannesburg, according to the initial report of the crime scene issued on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Ipid, Grace Langa, stated in a statement that “the intelligence led them to a specific safe house at 50 Friars Hill Road in Rosettenville, where suspects had convened for their final preparation.”

A helicopter was hovering over the safe house, and additional law enforcement officers were taking up positions on the ground below it.

After becoming aware of the helicopter’s presence, the suspects opened fire, prompting a counter-attack by officers in the aircraft.

According to the report, “the perpetrators kept firing at police officers when the ground members jumped in.” “The suspects attempted to flee from the safe house in a variety of ways, some on foot, some in their cars, and others by jumping over the walls into neighboring homes,” Langa said.

The shootout lasted for a little longer, during which time other support vehicles from law enforcement organizations arrived.

In an adjacent home on Hakka Road, five of the suspects who hopped over the fence kept the inhabitants hostage for a period of time.

“The shoot-out resumed as the members made their way inside this residence. As a result, the suspects were overwhelmed, and the police were able to detain ten of them, two of whom were injured and transferred to a hospital under police protection,” Langa added.

While this was going on, backup police units were tracking down the other suspects who had left the area and taken over a white Volkswagen Polo Vivo as their getaway vehicle.

Another shoot-out ensued as a consequence of this.

During the event, eight suspects died and a total of ten were apprehended. Five of those detained are Zimbabweans, one is from Botswana, and four are South Africans, according to the police.

Three police officers were hurt, and one was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Langa said that the crime scene was separated into five sections since it was so large.

The following weapons were discovered at the initial site, according to the police:

The following items are included: one assault rifle with a filed off serial number, one empty magazine, and 23 live bullets;

72 expended rifle-caliber cartridges were found;

Five different types of commercial explosives;

Six Carmex wires are used.

There are three detonator codes.

One Audi Q3 that has been stolen;

One Ford Ranger that has been stolen;

One Mercedes-Benz that has been stolen;

One Range Rover has been taken, as well as

One Audi S4 has been taken.

It was discovered that the cars and weapons included fingerprints and DNA swabs. “False registration numbers were found on all of the stolen cars,” stated Langa.

There was a silver Polo TSI, a grey Ford Focus, two assault rifles with filed off serial numbers, a white Toyota Quantum, a white Toyota Hilux, and a white NP300 in the second scene. There was also one Max Corolla with Malawian registration number, a Toyota Etios, a stolen silver grey BMW, one white Toyota Quantum, and one NP300 in the third scene.

Three magazines containing a total of 54 live bullets were seized from the BMW X3 during the investigation.

“One two-way radio and two balaclavas were discovered inside the BMW,” the report says.

It was discovered that “two dead suspects who had undergone numerous gunshot wounds were inside the BMW,” according to Langa.

One of the Toyota Quantums included an assault weapon, nine tiny commercial explosives, two empty magazines, one gel commercial explosive, four detonator codes, and a battery, among other things.

One of the suspects, who had died, was laying on the street not far from the grey BMW.

According to Langa, 356 expended rifle rounds of various calibers were discovered at the site.

It was discovered that the cars and weapons included fingerprints and DNA swabs. “Examinations were performed on the three people who died at this scenario.”

The following objects were discovered by the police at the third scene:

One assault weapon with a serial number that has been filed off;

Four magazines, each containing 117 live rounds of rifle calibre ammunition;

two rifle ammo rounds that have been used up; and

the deceased former military man who was discovered dead

One spent rifle cartridge, two magazines with 55 live bullets each, and balaclavas were found at the fourth scene. The weapon in this scene was an AK-47 with its serial number filed off.

Four murdered suspects, all of whom had numerous gunshot wounds, were discovered inside a residence that had been designated as the fifth location.

It has been determined that the suspects are the ones who escaped from scene one and kept the house’s inhabitants as hostages, according to Langa’s statement.

Three assault rifles with their serial numbers filed off were discovered at the scene, as well as one rifle with one magazine loaded with 28 live rounds, one rifle with two magazines and 54 live rounds of ammunition, one rifle with one magazine and 31 live ammunition rounds, and 33 spent rifle calibre cartridges. Three assault rifles with their serial numbers filed off were also discovered at the scene.

Two wasted rounds, four telephones without SIM cards, two gloves, balaclavas, and overalls were discovered, as well as two spent bullets.

“There were several bullet holes in the residence, as well as smashed windows. Guns were seized with fingerprints and contact DNA still attached to them.

‘The gloves, overalls, and balaclavas were removed in order to be submitted for DNA analysis,’ Langa said.
