Patrice Motsepe lavishes funds on political parties

Billionaire Patrice Motsepe was the most generous donor to South Africa’s political parties in the last quarter, with the ANC receiving the largest single donation.

Motsepe’s African Rainbow Minerals and Harmony Gold paid a total of R13,454,209 to the five major political parties represented in parliament between October 5 and October 19.

The ANC received the most money in the last quarter, totaling R22,803,969, with its biggest single donor, Batho Batho, paying the party R15 million.

Batho Batho has strong ties to the ANC and is linked to Shell, which has caused a stir with its plans to conduct seismic exploration along the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast, which have since been halted by the court.

This is according to a report released on Tuesday by the Independent Electoral Commission.

Harmony Gold donated R5,853,969 to the ANC between October 5 and October 19.

Companies affiliated with Motsepe, who is also the president of the Confederation of African Football, have donated millions of dollars to major political parties.

The new Political Funding Act requires parties to report all donations to the IEC that exceed R100,000 to the IEC. In turn, the IEC issues a quarterly report detailing the companies that have donated either monetarily or in kind to various political parties.

According to the most recent report, African Rainbow Minerals and Harmony Gold were among the most charitable companies, donating millions of rand to the ANC, DA, EFF, IFP, and even the Freedom Front Plus.

Motsepe is best known for his association with the African National Congress (ANC).

African Rainbow and Harmony Gold both gave money to the DA. Both companies made payments of R2,115,019 on different dates.

Payments to the other three parties follow a similar pattern, with both companies paying the same amount to each.

Both companies paid the EFF R1,099,088 in two installments, while the IFP received R343,794 in two installments.

With two payments of R242,219, FF Plus received the least.

Political parties were preparing for local government elections at the time of the payments, which usually means they spent more money on posters, rallies, and T-shirts.
