The video of a shootout during a business robbery at Rosettenville yesterday has left many people shocked, with some wondering why South Africa has become a playground for criminals.
According to several reports, 18 suspects were trying to rob a cash van yesterday and the police responded swiftly. The robbers opened fire at the men in blue a chopper, refusing to surrender.
During the shootout which left some of the police officers wounded, ten robbers were shot dead and eight of them were arrested. Bheki Cele came to the crime scene to speak to the suspects, shocked at what the criminals had done.
During an interview with eNCA, Cele revealed that most of these criminals are from Zimbabwe, Botswana, and some from KwaZulu-Natal. He further revealed that one of the gang members who shot at the chopper injured both the pilot and the assistant pilot.

Cele adds that one of the suspects told him that they have resorted to crime due to poverty, which he has rubbished, telling him that if they were hungry, they would not have afforded to buy 8 AK-47s.
In graphic pictures shared by Yusuf Abramjee, the dead suspects were seen lying on the floor in the building and some of them were shot dead inside a BMW vehicle. It has been reported that seven of them are on the run, and sadly, five police officers were wounded and are in hospital fighting for their lives.
According to the public’s opinion, the arrested suspects should not be alive as there is a chance that they will be out on bail regardless of opening fire at police officers.
These gangs are many. They are dangerous and not afraid to open fire and kill. Most of them are heavily armed and have high-speed getaway vehicles. 25 suspects were working together to rob a cash truck, and they did not care who they hurt during the attack. That is the current state of this country.
I agree with Cele. Criminals continue to blame their despicable acts on poverty, yet they can afford to buy expensive firearms and ammunition which does not add up.
The government has to outlaw illegal guns and explosives. Something has to be done to solve these hardened, heartless criminals. They have no regard for human life, no matter their nationalities.
