Boris Johnson announces end of almost all COVID-19 restrictions in England

The prime minister announced that “all remaining domestic restrictions will be removed” in England. Free asymptomatic testing for the public is set to end on April 1, but those with symptoms from the most vulnerable populations will still receive free tests. Requirements to self-isolate after a positive test will also be removed, but the infection survey will remain and the ability to ramp up testing through NHS will be possible. Johnson cited the cost of widespread testing and said the country needs to “learn to live with this virus and continue protecting ourselves and others without restrictions on our freedoms.”

NB: This Moment has been updated to reflect that the most vulnerable populations will still receive free tests after April 1 if they are symptomatic. Optimistically, South Africa is soon to follow with lifting the remaining restriction, everything is about to go back to its normal state. i can’t wait for the new South Africa where we’ll be able to get in everywhere without being asked for face masks.
