In Rosettenville, Gauteng, a group of criminals comprised of South Africans, a Botswana national, and Zimbabweans fired gunfire with police personnel. Two police officers are allegedly on the run after a deadly attempted theft, according to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
They are among nine suspects who escaped after a Monday afternoon shootout between officers and alleged cash-in-transit (CIT) theft suspects. A total of eight robbers were slain. Police officers’ involvement in nefarious activities comes at a time when the public has little faith in the SAPS.
The Hawks detained two officers from the crime intelligence section last week on suspicion of engaging in criminal activity with a group of four to six people accused of committing robberies in Gauteng. The Botswana national, one of ten individuals apprehended, is suspected of being involved in multiple cash-in-transit (CIT) heists across the country, according to Langa.
She claimed the man was termed a CIT mastermind and was apprehended after months of having eluded capture. “The Botswana suspect is a cash-in-transit mastermind in South Africa. He has been a wanted criminal for a long time, and they were finally able to apprehend him “Langa said. She explained that the investigation has been handed over to Ipid as a result of the shoot-out between police and the gang.
The Zimbabwean men are all Ndebele from Bulawayo, while the South African men are all Zulus from KZN, which Bheki Cele found surprising.
