Principal attacked by parents after teacher rapes 14-year-old girl

After being detained for allegedly raping a 14-year-old child, a 36-year-old high school teacher from northern KwaZulu-Natal appeared in court on Monday.

Col Thembeka Mbele, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police, said the student was allegedly raped at school on Friday.

“The incident was reported to the police, and the case was sent to the family violence, child protection, and sexual offenses unit for further investigation.”

She said the suspect was kept in jail until a formal bail application was filed on February 28.

The governing council apologized for not informing parents “about the painful circumstances” that occurred at the school on Friday in a letter on the school’s letterhead addressed to parents.

“There aren’t enough words to express our amazement and disbelief. We regret to report that a departmental educator allegedly sexually assaulted a student on Friday during school hours.”

According to the letter, the victim’s parents were notified right away.

“The learner was transferred to the hospital crisis center with the help and cooperation of the school psychologist.”

The instructor had been taken from the school by police, according to the letter, and the problem had been reported to the provincial education department.

“A thorough examination is currently underway.”

The reaction to the incident was “violent and intense, and the principal was also attacked,” according to the report.

“It’s understandable that the community was outraged by the incident. Two counsellors have been appointed to help the family, staff, and students who require assistance.”

Tensions were high outside the school and the court on Monday as parents, members of the ANC, and supporters protested the teacher’s rape claim.

Children are sent to school to be educated and to grow into successful adults; they are not sent to school to be abused. It’s unfortunate that this adolescent went through such a traumatic experience in the hands of someone her parents and school trusted with her safety.
