Four people have been arrested for possessing endangered plants

Four suspects are spending the weekend in jail after being arrested on Friday in Milnerton, Cape Town, for possessing endangered succulent plants without documentation.

The suspects, aged 19 to 27, were apprehended as part of a joint intelligence operation by Malmesbury police, Kuilsrivier Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit (STESU), Sanparks Cape Town, Vredendal Crime Intelligence, National Intervention Unit Cape Town, and Cape Nature.

When officers searched the suspects’ home on Algoa Road, they found 25,000 different species, an undisclosed amount of cash, four cellular phones, and a Chevrolet Aveo, according to police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of flora possession without documentation.

It’s really shocking how they got into contact with these plants and it’s very evident that they wanted to sell it. It’s a good thing that they were caught on time .
