Flies buzz and a smell of waste hangs about Mtakatye and Lwandile junior optional schools in Ngqeleni. This is on the grounds that students have been compelled to alleviate themselves in open fields as neither one of the schools has safe latrines.

Mvelelo Bumazela, the head of Mtakatye in Mamolweni Village, says when he was designated head in 2017, development of another school block with ten flush latrines had not been finished and the new latrines were being utilized for capacity.

He said he had composed a few times toward the Eastern Cape Education Department and requested the development to be finished, “yet I never gotten help”.

Bumazela said the school doesn’t have cash for a “honey sucker” to clear the pit restrooms. The old pit restrooms are dying down and perilous.

The school has 464 students who share the 12 pit restrooms with educators.

Xoliswa Mhlaba, a departmental head at the school who additionally showed up in 2017, said the smell at the latrine block “makes me debilitated”.

The school fence is broken and homeless canines alarm the kids. There is no entrance control and the chief concerns that kids will meander down to the ocean, to local Presley Bay.

There are four water tanks, yet just a single 5,000 liter tank is working. Students need to clean up from water-filled, old wine box foil packs (papsaks) loaded up with water.

“The condition of our latrines is horrendous. They smell and are exceptionally profound. The dividers and rooftops shake on blustery days. The entryways are broken. In some cases we find snakes since there is tall grass close to the latrines,” said Mkhamndeli.

School overseeing body administrator Mkhombeni Gxutshuza said when they griped to the division about the latrine project being incomplete, they were given two portable latrines, however the office has since taken them back.
