Doctor who sent undeserving patients to lawyers faces RAF fraud case.

For more than a decade, a doctor in the Eastern Cape prepared medical reports in which he directed “undeserving customers” to legal companies. He has now been in court on charges of allegedly cheating the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

A specialist commercial crime court in Mthatha freed Dr Zonke Mrenqwa-Mazwi, 42, on R10,000 bond on Wednesday after finding him guilty of fraud.

In a statement released by the Hawks, spokesman Capt Yolisa Mgolodela said Mazwi is said to have revealed that she treated 75 patients between February 2008 and February 2019 who were involved in nine incidents.

According to accounts, she wrote medical evaluations that suggested unworthy customers to legal companies for assistance with RAF claims. “

It is believed that the RAF paid out R510,000 to the claimants before realizing there were anomalies in the other claims.” In 2019, the RAF forwarded the matter to the Hawks Mthatha severe commercial crime investigation team, which resulted in Mrenqwa-arrest Mazwi’s on February 16 as a result of their investigation.

Besides the R510,000 that was purportedly paid out to claimants, the inquiry indicated that the RAF was on the verge of incurring a possible loss of more than R18 million.”

The case has been rescheduled until March 28.
