People believe that being a teacher is a sacred calling that only the worthy should answer. They believe that the highest form of payment teachers receive is seeing their students succeed in the subjects they teach.
On the 21st of January the whole country erupted with joy after the release of matric results. Although teachers were not mentioned much, the smiles on the learners with multiple distinctions made it all worth.
But a teacher simply put, is an employee who like any other workers, works for a salary. A teacher is a provider and also has needs that must be paid for with money.
135000 Teachers in Zimbabwe have been on strike since the beginning of the school year in their country. Teachers said that, they can no longer afford to commute to work because of the measly salary they receive for their hard work.
Workers in Zimbabwe earn an average salary of US$100 per month, which is equivalent to R1514 in South African rands. This is far too small and surely cannot cover any living expenses.
The government decided to suspend all the teachers for not showing up to work when schools re-opened two weeks ago. Learners are seen roaming the streets while others are playing in classrooms.
Zimbabwe is under the highest level of economic depression. The removal of the late and former president Mugabe did not improve the lives of our neighbours.
Majority of citizens of Zimbabwe live in South Africa legally and illegally. Many see no point in living and working in the country of their forefathers.
The quality of the Zimbabwean education is believed to be very high compared to that of counties in the SADC region, but the country’s economy is in turmoil with no real sign of ever bouncing back.
The government in Zimbabwe does not seem interested to resolve the impasse and has therefore suspended teachers without offering an alternative.
