Virtually every day of God, South Africans are kept reminded that their lives are not safe at all due to the deleterious scourge of robberies and hijackings that have become so prevalent that they possibly rank among the highest in the World. Reports emerged last night that a former Premier Soccer League player became the latest victim of this level of criminality.

Charles Yohane, a retired versatile and speedy winger cum-left back who represented the now-defunct Bidvest Wits and the Zimbabwean national team, was reportedly hijacked and killed in Johannesburg at the weekend.
According to SuperSportTv journalist, Steve Vickers, the 48-years old’s badly wounded body was found in Soweto two days ago.
In the meanwhile, members of the South African police have launched a manhunt to bring the culprits to justice.

Regarded as one of the biggest Zimbabwean imports to the PSL, Yohane plied his trade at Wits for almost a decade between 1997 and 2006, and his legendary status was cemented when he became the undisputed holder of the most appearances at the club.
He made 268 apps while scoring a respectable 44 goals in all competitions.

During those years at the Clever Boys, he equally represented his national team with a distinction in each one of his 23 senior caps.
At the time of his death, he was part of the coaching unit of Leruma United plying its trade in the SAFA-affiliated ABC Motsepe league.

Yohane’s death could well be lamented by both the South African and Zimbabwean football fraternities.
However, it equally sparked a debate on social media platforms, with some people reiterating the fact that criminality has become the norm in the country and there needs to be urgency by the government to put a stop on its tracks before the country becomes a banana republic which is characterized by anarchy and lawlessness.

There is a sense in which the deceased’s compatriots are understood to be the chief protagonists in the committal of carjackings and robberies in South Africa.
The challenge they pose is quite huge considering that most of them are illegal and basically untraceable, hence they commit these heinous crimes unabated.

It is one’s opinion, therefore, that law enforcement agencies should work day and night in pursuit of the perpetrators, and in hope also that the Government could use this incident to deal decisively with crime.
We cannot continue living in fear and terror, because guaranteed security is a sacrosanct right of the citizens as enshrined in the constitution.
