Current data obtained from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) show that there are twenty seven federal colleges of education in Nigeria. Many of these institutions offer degree programs in affiliation with federal universities. However, only two of these colleges have been given accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run more than twenty degree programs.

The first of these two schools is Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri (Imo State). It was originally founded and an Advanced Teachers Training College by the government of the defunct Eastern Region. However, it was upgraded to the status of a college of education in the early 1970s. It came under the ownership of Federal Government of Nigeria in 2007 and was subsequently named after Ikoku, the man who founded Aggrey Memorial Grammar School (the first African-owned secondary school in Nigeria. In addition to its conventional NCE programs, the institution offers about twenty three degree programs in affiliation with University of Nigeria Nsukka. The second institution in this category is Federal College Of Education, Pankshin (Plateau State). It was initially sited at a temporary site in Maraba but was moved to its permanent site in Pankshin three years later.
