Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister of Interior, lambasted those he once trusted politically on Monday, accusing them of disloyalty.
From 2010 to 2018, the former governor of Osun State declared that the politics of godfatherism and enthronement by treacherous leaders who equated themselves to the status of a god were no longer acceptable.
The 64-year-old minister claimed that he trusted APC National Leader Bola Tinubu, but that the ex-governor of Lagos State betrayed him.
Aregbesola accused Tinubu, as well as Bisi Akande, a former APC interim chairman and ex-governor of Osun State, of imposing the current governor, Gboyega Oyetola, on the people against their will.
Aregbesola, who leads an APC faction in the state and has been feuding with his successor, Oyetola, has accused the incumbent governor of failing to build on his eight-year accomplishments.
As a result, Aregbesola urged party members in Osun to vote for Moshood Adeoti, a former Secretary to the State Government, in Saturday’s governorship primary.
He also stated that similar to how Akinwunmi Ambode, the former governor of Lagos State, was rejected by APC members in 2019 for breaking the rules, Oyetola would be removed from office after only one term.
The minister, who claimed that the current administration in the state had abandoned true democracy and the principles that the party and its heroes stand for, also accused those in the power of abandoning true democracy and the principles that the party and its heroes stand for.
The former governor addressed members of the APC in the state’s Ijebu Jesa district ahead of Saturday’s governorship primary poll.
The incumbent governor, Oyetola; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuff Lasun; and former Secretary to the State Government, Adeoti; who recently returned to the ruling APC from the Action Democratic Party in June 2020, are among the candidates warming up for the party primary.
Aregbesola and Tinubu had been political allies for a decade. The former was the Director of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organization, which was responsible for Bola Tinubu’s electoral success in 1999 and his re-election in 2003. While Tinubu was governor of Lagos, Aregbesola served as Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure.
Those diligent observers have been watching the worsening relationship between Tinubu and Aregbesola with bated breath. When Tinubu was hospitalized for over three months for knee surgery and when over 100 prominent politicians converted the APC leader’s London home into a Mecca of sorts in 2021, the minister was nowhere to be there. Furthermore, Aregbesola has not been seen linking himself with Tinubu’s presidential bid in 2023.
Aregbesola has been at odds with Oyetola for a long time over what he sees as weak leadership and what appears to be a battle for control of the APC’s organs in Osun State.
Gboyega Famoodun, Oyetola’s man, was recently installed as the recognized party chairman in Osun by Governor Mai Mala Buni’s APC interim committee, ignoring Aregbesola’s group.
