Will Okezie be able to restructure the A-line Ariaria market he demolished before leaving office?

The life of the 2015 general elections will be coming to an end in a few months’ time. For this reason, many politicians who are in authority are doing everything possible to fulfill their campaign promises.

In Abia state, it’s a different ballgame. The governor of Abia state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, began last minute infrastructural development. He failed to rebuild places in Aba, Abia state. Early this year, Okezie embarked on a massive infrastructural development in Abia state.

Last year, Okezie demolished the A-line in the Ariaria international market in Aba. He promised to rebuild it in a short time. The lockup shops were demolished because of the flood that was ravaging the market. After demolishing the market, many rubbished the idea since there was no concrete agreement between the government and the traders, who thought that the governor would have given them enough time to plan their way before demolishing the market.

Over six months after the demolition of the market, nothing has happened at the site. Many are languishing in poverty, hunger, and death after the market was demolished. Now that Okezie Ikpeazu has had a short time in the office, he has not started anything yet. Is he going to leave it that way and wait for the next administration? Why would he destroy it in the first place if he knew that he would not restructure the market?

The last time I visited the scene, I only saw a few iron pillars, suggesting that work would soon begin, but as of today, many months after my visit, the site is still adamant with no work going on. Because of money, some of those who lost their shops have not been able to get another shop. Some may have relocated to the village or left the city for an unknown destination. But Okezie Ikpeazu continually declared the readiness of his government to rebuild the market. The A-line market is home to most of the Igbo billionaires who came from different states. Some of them are living in abject poverty, hunger, etc.
