Arsenal football club ran away with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton wanderers in their English Premier league fixture which went down yesterday at Molineux courtesy of a 25th minute strike by Gabriel.
One of the event that occurred during the match which raised a lot of debate was the red card issued to Gabriel Martinelli on the 69th minute.
During the match, the young Brazilian midfielder went pushed off a wolves player, Daniel Podence in retaliation after a foul was not awarded to him. He went on to take out Chiquinho. This made it two poor tackles against 2 different Wolves players in the space of 10 seconds. The center referee, Michael Oliver signaled for a foul and gave Martinelli 2 yellow cards at the spot for the two offences and then issued him a red card.
Many have asked why the referee should give two red card in the same passage of play? The honest answer is that, it is possible for a referee to issue two yellow card in the same passage of play like we saw in the case of Martinelli. Many referee might decide to give Martinelli a yellow card for the two offence but it doesn’t mean that each of the offence doesn’t deserve yellow card for each. Now let us scrutinize the rule on playing advantage.
According to the rules, “if the referee plays an advantage for an offence for which a caution or sending-off would have been issued had play been stopped, this caution or sending-off must be issued when the ball is next out of play “.
From the above rule, Martinelli committed the first bookable offence which the referee waved play on and the same Martinelli launched another poor tackle and brought down another player just immediately after that. Remember that Wolves were on a fast attacking move. So Martinelli deserves a yellow card for the first offence and deserves the second for his second offence of which both were as a result of retaliation.
