UTAG STRIKE : Parties To Reach A Consensus Soon – Edu Minister Reveals

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, is hopeful that the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the National Labour Commission (NLC) will reach a consensus in the coming days.

This was after the Minister met with the various heads of public universities in Ghana otherwise known as vice chancellors, the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations today to hold an extensive discussion over the prolonged UTAG strike.

In a Facebook post monitored by Bricy Boateng, the Member of Parliament Bosomtwe and Educationist said,“ In efforts to resolve the ongoing UTAG strike, I met with Vice Chancellors, Ghana, this morning at the Ministry of Education. Also in attendance was the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Bright Wireko-Brobby. After extensive discussions, I am hopeful that all parties will reach a consensus soon.”

The relationship between UTAG and the Labour Commission has not been an unhealthy one, as there is a display of ego among the two parties. This has prolonged the strike action at the detriment of university students in the public universities.

Reacting to the seeming unending strike action, the National Union Of Ghana Students (NUGS) in a presser asked the government to intervene to bring the matter to a halt. NUGS also suggested that the NLC should be made to withdraw the court case against UTAG whereas ensuring that the aggrieved university teachers be given what is due them.

UTAG went on a nationwide strike action about three weeks ago over lack of payment of allowances by the government. Since then, some universities are considering closing the school to allow students to go home after three good weeks of no academic activities.
