St. George’s Pathology Department of the St. George’s Hospital will be facing the Asokwa circuit court soon as the Bretuo family clan of Kumasi Tafo, prepares to sue the hospital for a breach of their family’s will. The family head of the Bretuo family, Ohenenana Kwame Wiredu-Odimsem in his report, stated that they will not rest until the pathological doctors at the St. George’s Pathology Department of the St. George’s Hospital pays for disrespecting their family norms and cultural practices.Â
In an interview, Ohenenana Kwame Wiredu-Odimsem added that it was within their right as a family to determine whether their late brother and father, Sebastian Wiredu, was to be taken to the pathological department for an autopsy or not before the hospital could have done the autopsy, but their consent was not sought before the pathological department of the St. Gorge’s Hospital went ahead with the autopsy. We will sue them and make them pay for all the disregard shown to our cultural practices, the Bretuo family head, Ohenenana Kwame Wiredu-Odimsem said this morning.
Dr Benjamin Bediako known as Dr BB, the in charge of the St. Gorge’s Pathological Department confirmed that, they needed no consent of the family because, as protocol demanded of them, nothing was done illegally. Â
The late, Dr Sebastian Wiredu was a doctor with the St. Gorges Hospital and based on our laid down protocols, any member of this hospital who dies in the line of duty, is bound to an autopsy so the hospital can understand their cause of death and prevent future employees from falling victim to the same circumstances. Before you start work with St. Gorge’s, you must sign a health policy contract giving St. Gorge’s Hospital the right to your body for the purpose of autopsy only.Â
We do this to understand why you died and there is nothing wrong with that so we haven’t broken any laws or code of conduct, Dr BB said in his response to the Bretuo family this morning.Â
The late Dr Sebastian Wiredu, a former doctor of St. Gorge’s Hospital, died at the St. Gorge’s Hospital on 12 January after a short illness. The hospital on their standing orders pushed the body of the late Dr Sebastian Wiredu to the St. Gorge’s Pathology Department where an autopsy was conducted on the body on the 27 and 30 January 2022.Â
The family of the late Dr Sebastian Wiredu, had ordered the St. Gorge’s Pathology Department to desist from performing the autopsy on the 27 and 30 January but the hospital standing by their policy and the consent Dr Sebastian Wiredu himself gave whiles alive, went ahead and performed the autopsy.
The Bretuo family of the late Dr Sebastian found out this morning when a copy of the autopsy report was delivered to them by the hospital despite their stand on the autopsy. The family according to Ohenenana Kwame Wiredu-Odimsem, is heading to court to seek damages against the doctors for going against their will. Â
