The Mother Of All Economic Solutions: 10 Things E-levy Is Supposed To Do.

In the government’s attempt to convince the citizens of Ghana to agree to pay the proposed Electronic transaction levy, otherwise known as E-levy, more than enough reasons have been given; it seems no other solution is needed to put the economy on good footing, except the E-levy.

In fact, the E-levy, per the comments of government communicators, is turning out to be the only solution to all Ghana’s economic woes.

The Finance Minister, who introduced the levy in the budget of 2022 gave three reasons. These are what we call the “original reasons”. However, today, we have over seven more reasons why the tax was introduced.

Jobs. This is one of the official and original reason. Government intends to use part of the revenue to set up some estimated 11 million employment opportunities for the young men and women of the country.

Roads. Another original idea. This same revenue from the E-levy is to be used to construct roads.

The third and final original reason was to improve on cybersecurity.

After the budget had been read, the opposition to the E-levy seems to have overwhelmed the government. In a clearly desperate attempt, every sector minister is now saying, his/her ministry’s success is dependent on the successful implementation of E-levy.

We are therefore having more and more reasons, ridiculous and asinine ones.

Fertilizer. The minister of Agric came in hard. He threatened that, without E-levy, there will be no subsidy on fertilizers for farmers.

Free SHS. Dr. Kusi Boafo on Kessben Fm told listeners that, if we are not willing to accept E-levy, we must equally forget free SHS.

Reduce Borrowing. According to the finance minister, in order to achieve reduction in borrowing, E-levy must come.

IMF: The return to IMF for assistance, and subjecting the country to all manner of conditionality, can be avoided if we pay the tax.

The list is endless. Perhaps, we must sympathise with the handlers of this economy and support them by paying. Because, soon, the air we breathe might finish if we don’t agree to this E-levy.
