‘Poor People Are Those Who Earn GH¢70 A Year And Such People Will Not Pay E-Levy’ – Minister Says

The Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah during a seminar held in Accra took his time to explain to the people of Ghana what the E-Levy is all about and the people who are not suppose to pay the E-Levy. According to the Minister, most people are of the view that, the E-Levy is going to cause hardship on the people of Ghana. But to him any person who is able to send more than hundred cedis to another person is considered not poor. Explaining this he says, “poor people are those who earn GH¢70 a year and such people will not pay E-Levy”.

According to the Minister, if a worker who is working in the public domain earns GH¢1,600 per month and the same person sending GH¢100 to another person, it means for the whole month the person would make a total contribution of GH¢3,000 which is more than his or her income per month. According to the Minister the fact that the person is able to send GH¢100 means the person is qualify to pay the E-Levy. The Minister says, the E-Levy has nothing to do with people who are poor as they earn GH¢70 per year. The E-Levy has become one of the headlines in the public domain as many people are wondering about how the charges would increase as far as this E-Levy is concerned.
