“Now, E-Levy Has Turned Into ‘Akobalm’ Why?” – Kwesi Pratt Mocks Government

E-levy Has Become Like ‘Akobalm,’ Curing Headaches and Stomach Pains. The electronic tax, often known as the e-levy, is now one of the contentious issues of the Akufo-Addo administration that is being opposed at all stages, particularly by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a section of the Ghanaian people.

The e-levy, which was initially revealed by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta during his delivery of the 2022 Financial Report and Economic Policy to Parliament, has been met with intense opposition, as citizens worry it will exacerbate their sufferings.

The administration, on the other hand, is dead set on passing the E-levy Bill so that the electronic tax may go into effect as soon as possible.

The government feels it is the answer to the nation’s economic development difficulties, and the revenue collected through this channel will assist the government in reviving the economy.

Despite the government’s assurances regarding the e-benefits, levy’s veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt has joined the chorus of Ghanaians who question its usefulness.

On Tuesday, he said on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” that recent polls show that more than 98 percent of Ghanaians oppose the e-levy, and he wonders why the government still wants to implement it

He urged the administration to pay attention to Ghanaians’ legitimate concerns.

He also revealed the results of another survey, which found that Ghana has lost $8 billion in undervaluation of its gold exports and another $2 billion in unaccounted-for gold exports, prompting him to question why the government is not focusing on this area to recoup adequate revenues to develop the country.

“Now, our authorities are overdoing this,” Mr. Pratt said, referring to how the e-levy has all of a sudden become the principal remedy for Ghana’s economic issues. Farmers will not be able to obtain fertilizer without the e-levy, according to them. Government employees, they allege, cannot be paid without the e-levy. e-levy is not implemented, there will be no roads. They claim that without the e-levy, there will be no access to water… and that without the e-levy, health care will suffer. What do I mean?… As a result, the e-levy has become the solution to all problems.”

Mr. Pratt exclaimed, “If you have a headache, e-levy!” as he expressed surprise at how this electronic tax has evolved into something of a salvation for Ghanaians. E-levy if you have leg pains!! e-levy, Why?… Now, e-levy has turned into ‘akobalm’. Why?”
