Look At These Photos Of Ghanaian Markets in 1985 And Compare It To Now

Photos of markets in Ghana during 1985 were posted on social media to show how Ghanaian markets looked like in the past. The photos looked very joyful and busy and was appreciated by a number of people on social media. For folks who weren’t born at that time, this was a very good trip into the past of the country especially seeing, the clothes they wore, the hats they had on and the foodstuffs being sold in that era was quite refreshing.

In the midst of admiring these photos of the past, one thing about them stood out significantly. Generally, one is curious to see before and after photos of an event or location but it was very disappointing to see the markets in 1985 and compare them to this day because anyone would mistaken these photos as photos taken just this morning because there is no difference in the photos and today’s reality. Some similarities includes the usage of baskets to sell maize which is still a common practice today, the selling of tubers of yam on floor is very much the same and most similar item will be the famous hats wore by the market women to provide them with some shade against the heat of the sun or prevent direct sunlight from hitting them. The hat wore in the photos which is still wore today shows the infrastructure problems the nation faces. Market women still lack basic infrastructure to sell their goods in. Also vegetables are still being exposed on tables without proper cover to prevent attracting insects.

Basically nothing has changed, and this represents a sad part of our reality as a country because it seems there have been no significant improvement in our markets for the past 50 years and this clearly depicts how far we have come as a country. Clearly , there have been no conscious effort on the part of the government to make improvements in that aspect of the economy over the years and this shows the overall problems we face as a nation. There is one ultra modern facility built by the previous government but the country need more of them to improve the conditions of the market women.

The photos attracted some comments on social media with MenoGh saying ”During this time there was no kidney and liver diseases oo. I mean was just a little number. stop eating animals, they are not meant for food”. Another social media user also commented that there have been no changes since when the photos were taken but quickly got a reply as one social media user replied him by saying 3 tubers of yam is now 50 cedis, how is that not an improvement??. @Mister manaf also said ‘’Seeing olden pictures in colored gives me serious anxiety. So these people were actually not seeing things in black and white? How????’’ Another user with the username as @eddy said ”Back then it was not yet a shame to smoke in public? If you do that nowadays in Ghana…

Do you think there have been any improvement or the government must do better?
