The issues concerning the infamous E-levy tax seems to be causing anger and distress among some Ghanaians who have taken bold decisions to chastise the government for the proposals. Many Ghanaians have shared mixed reactions over the policy proposal calling on the government to scrap the E-levy from the budget.
However, it seems government is bent on introducing the controversial E-levy tax, which according to them would supplement government’s effort in building roads and creating massive employment opportunities for the youths of this country. Despite these justifications given by the government and backed by the Majority Caucus in Parliament, the Haruna-led Caucus has also registered its opposition to the bill.
On TV3’s NewDay show, anger was raging as the host reacted to the government’s recent Townhall meetings on the E-levy. According to Berla Mundi, she finds it worrying to understand what has become so necessary for the Townhall meetings and engagements now. She believes such meetings would have yielded better results if it was done before the introduction of the E-levy.
Speaking further, she revealed that it appears to her that the government is attempting to take an entrenched position on a proposal that has been fiercely protested by Ghanaians. She indicated that any listening government would instead of justifying their stance and charging rate, rather take into consideration the recommendations made by the same people they have consulted.
According to Berla Mundi, the NPP government has failed to make any changes to the current form of the E-levy tax despite the two successive town hall meetings. Berla Mundi revealed that she has zero hope in the ongoing nationwide press conferences and meetings because the government has proven not to be a listening government. She said, “Forget about these Townhall meetings. The government is not a listening one and will not consider them. It seem you have taken a fixed position on the bill.”
