We’re Not Going To Chicken Out; Suit Doesn’t Bother Anyone – Prof Gyampo

The General Secretary of the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) Professor Ransford Gyampo, says they would not chicken out, by the legal action brought against them by the National Labour Commission, they are not returning to work.

The Commission, which is a creature of law, and mandated to settle labour disputes in the country, has declared the strike by the university teachers as illegal and directed that it should be called off.

The teachers, however, insist that their action to press for better conditions of service is legitimate.

The Commission has since gone to the court seeking an order to compel the striking lecturers to go back to teach their students. Prof Gyampo said; “the suit does not bother anyone.

We knew that was what the NLC was going to do, and we were prepared.

They, even delayed, and it took them a long time to go to court.

The court is presided over by competent judges who will be able to look at the merit of the case.

It should be put out there that the earlier case via ex-parte to restrain us from continuing with the strike was not granted by the court.

We are going there on Thursday in person to explain why our strike should continue.

That is what we are bent on doing, so we will meet the NLC in court.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Benjamin Arthur, has said that the university teachers are breaking the labour laws with their ongoing strike and should therefore call it off and return to the negotiating table.

“Trust me every worker in Ghana deserves his or her pay and I wish they are made better.

The ability to pay remains a key constraining factor and you must understand.”
