The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed their disappointments in the government of Ghana and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) in a seeming unresolved disagreement between the two parties.
Speaking to the press yesterday, the students body in a press statement issued noted that the seeming unending strike action by UTAG over the past weeks since public universities resumed academic work is having a dire toll on the students and parents as well.
“ We the students are disappointed by the inability of the Government and UTAG to reach a consensus. It appears both parties have taken an entrenched stance, making dialogue almost impossible. It is unfair that from all these observations, both UTAG and government are acting without consideration of our plight.” The statement mentioned.
Additionally, the statement noted that from their observations, there is a lack of trust between the two parties involved making it difficult for the issues to be resolved.
“Throughput our observations with parties, we have observed that there is a lack of trust by both parties towards each other. We believe strongly this is the result of the constant breach of rules of engagements by both parties.”
The way forward
1.NUGS wants the Labour Commission to withdraw court case against UTAG.
2. UTAG should call off the strike.
3. Both parties to enter new negotiation without taking any entrenched position.
4. Government should expedite the implementation of Labor Market Survey.
5. Both parties must respect each other.
