Otto Addo and Chris Hughton are the two candidates being considered for the vacant Black Stars coaching job. The two distinguished coaches have separate persons through which their appointment could become the reality. In other words, Otto Addo and Chris Hughton have different set of persons or institutions backing their takeover.
Â
Ghana Football Association officials have held deep discussions with Otto Addo, with sources explaining that, former Black Stars player Otto Addo has agreed in principle to lead the Black Stars of Ghana from the dugout. A meeting took place between Ghana Football Association officials and Otto Addo in Germany, where the former gave assurances as to how things could ensue in the coming days and how his tenure will commence, the latter also expressed readiness to take over the National team, but that came after further considerations for days. As it stands, the Ghana Football Association are banking hopes on Otto Addo and will be clamoring for his appointment.Â
Then comes the issue of Chris Hughton, who has been linked with the vacant role because of the backing of some government officials. Following the dismissal of Milovan Rajevac, sources indicated that, Chris Hughton was invited into Ghana by some government officials, even though the invite coincided with a planned trip to Ghana. Talks began to take place between those government officials and the former Newcastle United manager. The Curriculum Vitae, experience and exposure of Chris Hughton courted the attention of those officials, as deliberations took to another level. Chris Hughton is reported to have been introduced to the Government of Ghana and assurances have been soundly given, with directions added for next line of action.
Â
From all indications, Ghana Football Association and the Government of Ghana have their respective choices in relation to who leads the Black Stars of Ghana against Nigeria and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
It is worth mentioning that, the Government of Ghana owns all National teams but are managed by the Ghana Football Association. This is mainly due to laid down rules and regulations by world football governing body FIFA. FIFA abhors interference and does not intend to deal directly with government, hence the decision to deal with football associations.Â
Despite government’s ownership of the National teams, the Ghana Football Association has been appointing coaches for the various National teams since time immemorial. It is however not clear why Government of Ghana will want to bring on board a new coach, but many reasons have been thrown out by some football analysts.
