This week on Rea Tsotella we met Malebale family that were in loggerheads fighting over the home that the grandparents had left behind for them. Mama Nkele and Tebogo wrote to the show because Solly had been the reason behind Mama Bertha’s death, Tebogo’s mother.
He tried to play the innocent act but it was very transparent
Tebogo claimed that his uncle had left his own home where he was married and came to bother his sister who was left at the house. This happened while Tebogo was jailed for robbery. Once released he tried his hardest to get his mother back home. The gift for this attempt at reunion? A screwdriver to the neck.
Mama Nkele supported Tebogo’s story, adding that she was so harrassed by her brother that she applied for an RDP and left the home. He is clearly a tyrant, dead set on making sure that the house is for him and his children and grandchildren.
I couldn’t judge Tebogo for going off at his uncle once they were gathered. He was the reason his mother died. He may not have raised a hand to her but his constant insults hurt her soft heart. I could understand why Tebogo was so angry, he was still grieving his mom. He couldn’t even build outside houses for his brother and sister because of his uncle being so dismissive to them.
Personal Thoughts
It irks me so much that men of the older generation believe that simply because they’re male, family houses belong to them. It’s such an outdated idea that needs to be done away with. Mama Nkele is the only other remaining sibling and I think that the fact that she is fighting so hard for her late sister’s children is so commendable.
Solly was quiet during the confrontation but I’ve seen men like him, they come alive and become their true selves when alcohol is involved. He needs to allow the grandchildren to build and not be displaced or else, like his sister and Bishop Makamu suggested, he must move.
