Traffic police officers have been under scrutiny of demanding and taking bribes from drivers, a culture that Kenyans have always been against.
There was drama at Tenwek Bridge on the Silibwet Merigi Kiptagich Road in Bomet County where a traffic police officer drove a Toyota probox after being denied bribe.
According to Daily Nation news reports, the driver flagged the car and demanded for some cash which he was not given prompting him (the officer) to snatch the key and crash the vehicle into the ditch.
“When the driver slowed down and parked the vehicle by the roadside, one of the police officers … grabbed the keys from the driver without offering any explanation.” Mr Ezekiel Terer, a passenger stated.
In the process of the drama, the traffic police officer crashed into a pedestrian injuring her limbs.
“The attempt to tow the vehicle was meant to divert attention from the crime committed by the officer and turn the heat on the driver. We could not allow that to happen when it was very clear who was in the wrong.” Mr Kevin Korir stated.
Is this a good way forward?
