Scary Security Situation; Terrified Teachers Fleeing For Safety

The scary security situation in the Bawku Municipality has sent many terrified teachers fleeing from the area to save their lives. In-excess of fifty (50) teachers have already left, sought for transfer.

George Ayeriga Azeriga, the Municipal Education Director, describes what is happening as deeply troubling.

The panic transfers are badly affecting teaching and learning, particularly, in the Bawku town.

Parents are also fearful of the threat of attack and are not sending their children to school as the Mamprusis and the Kusasis appear to have abandoned all thought of making peace and poised to do battle.

He said the teachers keep coming to the education office, asking to be sent to other places.

“For me, security is paramount and so if there are genuine fears that the teacher cannot go to certain schools, we will not hesitate to take you to a school you think you can be safe.”

Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, admits that the security situation in Bawku has gotten so bad that has been urging non-residents and people who do not come from the area to avoid the place.

“For now, we have relapsed into a very bad situation. In all honesty, even I am very careful where I go in my own constituency.

I don’t think it is advisable for someone who is not from there to come around.

Schools are not able to function, and the market has been relocated as people do not feel safe anymore.

People with shops are unable to open them. Everything has come to a standstill.”

The authorities have put in place a raft of measures to help restore calm to the place, but sporadic shootings have continued.

There is a heavy deployment of soldiers and police officers, curfew has been imposed, wearing of smock has been outlawed and riding of motorbikes banned but these measures have not stopped the shootings.

A police woman, stationed at Paga, who was visiting with a colleague at the Motor Traffic and Traffic Department (MTTD) was shot in the groin and killed by an unidentified assailant, recently.
