“People Confuse Me for My Mzungu Wife’s Driver Yet I Work at the World Bank” David Wachira Narrates

Lynn Ngugi the online journalist interviewed a man called David Wachira and he narrated his story from where he was born to working at the World Bank and the challenges he has faced for being a Korino.

David was born in Sagana, partly raised in Nyahururu and later on in Kayole after his father joined Saint Paul’s College. After his father was done with college he got an opportunity to move to the US for further education and he moved with his family when David was 12 years old.

By the age of 26, David had already attained a PhD in Public Finance and Governance Specialist. He applied for jobs at the World Bank and several universities but he was certain that he did not stand a chance to work at the World Bank.

To his surprise, he got job offers at two universities and the World Bank. It was a moment of celebration for him because so many people are jobless but he had three jobs to choose from. He accepted the offer at the World Bank and has been working there for the past nine years.

David is married to a Mzungu lady called Cecilie Olaussen and he revealed that most people confuse him for her driver because of his skin colour and the Korino turban.

He talked about the day when he was going to a conference with his wife at a certain hotel here in Kenya and at the gate there was a woman who signalled him and told him to come back and take him somewhere after dropping the one he was carrying. The woman thought that David was a taxi driver.

On entering the hotel compound, David headed for the building after packing but a security guard ran to him and asked, “Wewe mukorino unaenda wapi?”

David was surprised by that question because it dawned on him that even Kenyans discriminate each other in their own country. That he endures all that because he cannot go around explaining to everyone that he is a doctor and he works at the World Bank.
