There is a proverbial adage commonly thrown around which says, a week is a long time in politics, this could be idiomatically translated to mean; in politics, a lot of change can happen in a short space of time. This idiom can be easily applied to the ANC’s unfolding political dynamics, more so, as the party gears for its 55th national elective conference later this year.

Although there is tangible proof that the factional groupings/factions have formally consolidated, there is still a strong likelihood that individual leaders would defect from one faction to the other based on their political future projections.

David Mahlobo, the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, a fervent supporter of suspended Secretary-General Ace Magashule and an unrepentant RET proponent, made an unexpected statement about President Cyril Ramaphosa’s valiant efforts to renew and unite the .

Mahlobo, who was addressing ANC members at a 110-anniversary of the party in Free State, waxed lyrical about the significant contribution that Ramaphosa has made to chart a new path of unity and renewal. Similarly, he indicated that inasmuch as there have been successes on that front, there are equally failures that are mainly caused by certain ANC leaders.

“President Ramaphosa has led the charge to unite the organisation, Comrades, there are successes that we could report, but equally comrades we must report that there have been failures,” Mahlobo said.
“Amongst us comrades, in a revolutionary movement, are those who have caused difficulties in the ANC. Our journey for renewal even how difficult it is, we are going to march ahead and we wan comrades who are governed by the desire to ensure that there is unity in the ANC,” he added.

One could argue that Mahlobo’s words are laced with political support for Ramaphosa, and while he has not formally pronounced on the ANC’s succession battle, suffice to say that his words are enough to give branches glimpses of what the president has accomplished since taking office, which has largely consisted of resolutions adopted at the Nasrec Elective Conference.
