We Are All Safer Under Democracy-Nana Addo Tells ECOWAS, Slaps Burkina Faso With Suspension

29th January 2022

President Akuffo Addo has critisized the millitary in Burkina Faso for toppling the Christian Kabore’s administration. The chairman of ECOWAS expressed his disappointment in the latest coup d’etat in a zoom meeting with other West African leaders on Friday.

According to the Ghanaian leader, only democracy can secure the safety and development of the bloc. He entreated his colleagues in the region to do what it takes to protect the democracy.

“I am saddened by the millitary take over in Burkina Faso. No one expected this. So I want to encourage you all to do whatever it takes to maintain the democracy you are enjoying in your countries because we are safer under democracy”.

The bloc went ahead to suspend Burkina Faso. It however did not apply any other sanction for now unlike Mali and Guinea. These countries received trade sanctions for failing to return their nations to civilian rule within the time frame of ECOWAS.

Ironically, the citizens in these three countries seem to be happy with the millitary rule for the obvious reasons.

The millitary led by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba took over the governance of Burkina Faso on Sunday, January 24. This was after civilians had demonstrated heavily over the insurgence of Boko Haram in the country. The Islamic extremists have terrorised civilians in West Africa. Starting from Nigeria, the millitants have killed over a million people, abducted another one million and displaced over 10 million people.

Do you agree with the president that we are safer under democracy? There are those who think democracy is not good for Africa. What is your opinion? Use the comments section to share your thoughts. Remember to like and share this article.
