Kojo Asare, known in the Nyatase township of the Ejisu Municipal Assembly, has been served with five months remand for allegedly raping and threatening a 23-year-old woman. Kojo in receiving his remand this afternoon, shared uncontrollable tears until the presiding judge finished reading the sentence.Â
From what the court has heard from 20 January to today 27 January, it is the will of this court to remand Kojo Asare in custody as the police continue their investigations. You are hereby remanded until the 22 of June 2021. This court is adjourned, the presiding judge of the Ejisu District court said this morning in remanding the 40-year-old Kojo Asare into prison.
Kojo, under tears, could be seen showing signs of remorse; something the prosecutors had hoped Kojo won’t do. Kojo cried like a baby after the judge, Samuel Djanie Kotey finished reading his sentence.Â
Kojo Asare, 40, on the 9 January 2022, had asked his apprentice to go on a one week break. The tailor known as Master Asare, had asked all his apprentices to report to work on the 15 January, but later called all the apprentices and asked them to report on the 18 rather than the 15 January 2022.Â
Abrefi Owusuaa, an apprentice with Master Kojo, was not updated on the new 18 January date and reported to work on 15 January 2022. Kojo alone with Abrefi in his room apologised for not calling her to update her on the new date and asked the 23-year-old woman to prepare him a pepper soup.Â
Abrefi while at her master’s kitchen preparing the pepper soup, felt some hands around her. Kojo forced himself on Abrefi on the 15 January and threatened to kill her should she reveal anything to anyone.Â
Abrefi crying in her room on 18 January, was forced by her mother to report the case to the police. Kojo Asare was arrested on 19 January and taken to court on 20 January where he was remanded for one week.Â
Kojo reappearing in court today, was handed another remand for five months by the Ejisu District Court after the prosecutors added attempted to murder to the case this morning. The prosecutors had argued this morning that, Kojo after raping Abrefi, had threatened her on two occasions; the 15 January and on the 17 January, and hence the need for further investigations.Â
Kojo will be taken to the Kumasi central prisons on Friday where he will begin his 5-month remand sentence.
