The managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Junior has indirectly challenged the Speaker’s decision to quit wearing the parliament cloak except for ceremonial occasions. He admitted that there are some problems with the dress codes for the judiciary and legislature. That notwithstanding, Kwesi Pratt believed that it was not in the power of the Speaker to decide to start wearing traditional outfits whiles presiding over Parliamentary sittings.
“Whatever dress code which is adopted in Parliament, I would have thought would have been decided by those who make rules in Parliament but not by individuals. Especially when that individual has no votes in Parliament.
“Because the rules and regulations which govern the conduct by Parliament which the dress code is included are determined by the members of Parliament through a democratic process.”, he added.
Kwesi Pratt also expressed worry at the message Speaker Bagbin’s outfit had conveyed to Ghanaians. According to him, it never showed any sign of symbolism, modesty, equality, and republicanism. He believed that the outfit rather portrayed bloodline.
