After the conclusion of the first four-year term of the Akufo-Addo/ Bawumia administration, the comparison between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as to who are the best managers of the Economy became more significant, and the NPP wining the 2024 general election gives a clearer scorecard for contrasting the performance of these two major political parties.Â
If we are not to take the parties’ assessment of each other as the gospel truth, we can rely on an independent rating agency for the bare fact in other to make our own assessment.Â
As it stands, the verdict of Fitch provides us with a safe data to prosecute this issue.Â
Fitch Ratings Inc. is an American credit rating agency and is one of the “Big Three credit rating agencies”, the other two being Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. It is one of the three nationally recognized statistical rating organizations designated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
With respect to a country’s credit worthiness and how strong the Economy is, you can’t go wrong when rely on these agencies.Â
Per Fitch, Ghana’s economic strength has moved from stable to weak. That is the basic, incontestable fact.Â
Plotting the rating against the period from 2002, the chart indicated clearly that, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia led government has poorly.Â
To put it bluntly, they have been the poorest mangers of the Economy since the time of President Kufour.Â
This low level can be deposited squarely at the door step of the current vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahmudu Bawumia.Â
Of course, he is the head of the economic management team, and not only that, he has made every Ghanaian come to believe that, he is the messiah of the Ghanaian economy.Â
If today, all the major economic indicators are taking a nose dive, it will not be far-fetch If we leave the name of the President out and tag him as the worst economic manage in the fourth republic.
