Since time immemorial, Western Region has suffered several degrees of injustice, particularly with regards to the distribution of the national cake. Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was a direct product of this very region, and due to his selfless service for Ghana, occasioned key developmental projects in the country Central points, with the hope that it will generate rippling effects on other areas. This was a man who took an unbiased decision to save this country from developmental shrinkage in the Greater-Accra Region. Even those in the Northern parts benefitted massively in terms of scholarship schemes. John Dramani Mahama, the country’s former president, and other current leaders, inarguably are direct beneficiaries of those offers. However, today, instead of replicating and even doing more than Osagyefo did, they are rather making the country so difficult for the young men and women.
Justice is the least thing most people talk about today. Surprisingly, leaders today hypocritically allow unfortunate events to unfold before taking remedial actions to reverse them; and shamefully, the results are as bad as their intentions!
I quite remember the very statement the current Special Prosecutor of this country issued when asked about his position on corruption in Ghana, and how he intended fighting it. He said: “I cannot fight corruption, but I will make it uncomfortable for those who practice or indulge in it.” Few months after making this declaration, nothing significant has come from his side. The situation keeps worsening, and unfortunately, the health sector is seeing and feeling the impact of this social canker in its intense state.
When the news was broken that a Pregnant woman named Augustina Awotwe, from Western Region, precisely, Shame Junction had died due to a high display of unprofessionalism by two personnel of the country’s Ambulance Service, I quickly made reference to their leader. Kwaku Agyemang Manu as many know, is a very corrupt leader, and no wonder the two personnel toed his path, by demanding GH¢600 before they could perform their expected responsibilities. His COVID-19 Vaccine scandal is still fresh in the minds of Ghanaians.
This is very barbaric, and the law must work effectively, without any compromise. I am just wondering why sometimes the Ghana Police Service delay in their execution of justice. As an independent body, they must never tolerate any infringement on the fundamental human rights of every individual, particularly the vulnerable population.
Without hesitation and fail, these two personnel must be arrested and prosecuted immediately to serve as a great lesson for everyone in the Ambulance Service, and other jurisdictions as well. I have seen the release of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, calling for a probe into this heinous crime. This is not the time to play smart and win political points. It is an urgent matter of justice, and it must be pursued without any delay. Any little delay will mean that the law is not working.
