It has been a little over a year now since Ghana went to the polls to endorse the ruling New Patriotic Party and its leader, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo for the second time. Fast forward, 2024 is inching closer and there have been an intense heat in the ruling party as some stalwarts have publicly declared their intents to contest for the highest position as the flagbearer for the elite party.
One important thing that cannot be undermined or underestimated is the fact that, declaration to lead the party in 2024 general elections is synonymous to breaking the now popular agenda of “Breaking the 8”. It is on record that, the Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, Minister for Trade and Industry, Hon. Alan Kyerematen, Joe Ghartey, and other bigwigs have publicly announced their intentions to contest the position.
Earlier today, January 15, 2022, the respected Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper who doubles as the General Secretary for the Socialist Movement of Ghana, Mr. Kwesi Pratt has made bold statement concerning the race for the NPP flagbearership. He has said that, ot would be dictatorial for anyone to suggest that Ghanaians cannot make comments about the heated race within the party.
Mr. Kwesi Pratt made this bold disclosure in an interview on Alhaji and Alhaji show hosted by Sena Nombo on Pan African TV when asked to share his opinion on the contest. He has said that, the race in the ruling NPP promises to be a very competitive one since all the leading contestants have track records of impeccable achievements and performance both within the party and government.
Speaking further, Mr. Kwesi Pratt called for regard for constitutional dominance in the contest. He spoke vehemently against attempts to disallow Ghanaians from making comments about the happenings within the party. According to him, the party is a public institution and as a matter of fact the people have rights to express their opinions.
The verbose Journalist further indicated that, all political parties whether the opposition National Democratic Congress, New Patriotic Party, Convention Peoples Party and others are not private properties and should allow for criticisms from the general public. He insisted on opened communication and tolerance among party bigwigs and the general public.
He said, “Nobody can stop me from talking about NDC or NPP. They are all public institutions, not private properties. Every Ghanaian has the right to examine, comment on their action and to look into their future. This is because these are parties that control our lives and shape our destinies.”
