A former officer of the Ghana Armed Forces and now a Security Consultant has been recounting his bitter experience of begging on the streets of Lome, the capital of neighbouring Togo, all because of political instability.
Captain Budu Koomson (Retired), who spoke in an interview with an Accra-based radio station said “I ran with just a shirt on my back and I know how it is to survive in a hostile area, not speaking the language and not understanding them.
From my comfortable office, before I could say jack, for 10 days, I had to be begging on the street of Lome, and then you continue begging to see if dinner will come.”
He counseled everybody to cherish the peace and avoid making inflammatory statements, likely to incite others to violence.
He called for all, particularly the politicians to be measured in everything that they said, pointing out that, enacting doomsday scenario, was not a good thing for anybody to do.
He explained that “violence per se is not beneficial in the long run, and I tell people once you initiate the violence, you cannot predict the end of the violence.
You cannot even predict the trajectory that violence will take and you yourself will not survive that violence.
It is not a nice experience, and those who instigate violence should please, please stop.” He underlined the need for people to show political maturity, to accept to be tolerant of views and opinions they did not share.
The ex-military officer and security consultant said this was the beauty of multi-party democracy – the path the country had chosen to travel.
Nobody should take the peace of the country for granted by doing anything reckless, he added.
Ghana has been ranked as the most peaceful country in West Africa by the Global Peace Index and is the second most peaceful country in Africa, something every Ghanaian should be proud of.
