Former Deputy Minister for Information and now Chief Executive Officer of National Youth Authority (NYA), Honourable Pius Hadzide has made a bold statement about media freedom and operations in the country. He has said that, he wonders why the opposition National Democratic Congress has taken steps to tarnish the government’s effort to establish a progressive, effective and liberal media environment for Ghanaian Journalists.
According to the phenomenal CEO, his government intends to make the media a vibrant institution to aid the development of the country, hence the media capacity enhancement programme. He made this statement when speaking in an interview on TV3 NewDay Show hosted by Johnny Hughes earlier today, January 12, 2022.
Speaking during the interview, Honourable Pius Hadzide indicated that he wonders how NDC has raised alarms and questions about the government’s decision to organize such programs for the media. He believes the NPP government as a thinking government deems it necessary to offer support to the fourth estate.
He indicated that during his time at the Ministry of Information, the Minister Honourable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah was brutally against the low salaries of media men. He revealed that, his boss constantly opposed allegations of poor working conditions of broadcasters and Journalists. According to him, the media capacity enhancement programme would help expand the operationals of media houses and increase their profits.
Reacting to a statement by Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe, Pius Hadzide registered his resentment over allegations that the late lead investigator for Anas Aremeyaw, Ahmed Suale was murdered and his case has been made cold. Pius called for an end to such allegations, admonishing the general public to allow the investigators to bring finality to the issue.
He said, “It is very wrong to assume that investigations have stopped on the case. The police is still doing their work. There were Journalists who died when NDC was in power but their killers have not been found. Some died during Mahama’s era, what did you do? I wouldn’t allow anyone to make any unfounded statements.”
