The the 33rd edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2022, in Cameroon has just begun, but the ‘fire has started burning’ high.
The tournament which started on Sunday, 9 January 2022, saw teams like the host nation Cameroon crushing Burkina Faso 2: 1; Guinea securing a 1:0 win over Malawi, Gabon 1 Comoros 0, Morocco 1 Ghana 0, the defending champions-Algeria 0 Sierra Leon 0, Guinea Bissau 0 Sudan 0, and last but not the least; Nigeria 1 Egypt 0.
The fire in Group ‘D’, which is also considered by some fans as the ‘group of Death’, is burning higher than expected. The group has teams like the Super Eagle Eagles of Nigeria, The Pharaohs of Egypt, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria started the campaign on high spirits. They started a tough battle against their rivals the Pharaohs of Egypt and defeated them 1:0.
The Super Eagles recently fired their manager Gernot Rohr before the tournament. They also lost players like Victor Osimhen, Emmanuel Dennis, Leon Balogun and some other players. Nigeria however still has enough talent to to win the cup.
The Nigerian Team is one of the major favorites, in the 2022 AFCON tournament, but finding themselves in a group with the 7 times continental champion Egypt, is another story.
The ‘Pharaohs’ of Egypt are currently the ‘king’s of the African continent, with seven championships to their credit.Â
Egypt; though boasts of seven trophies, and looking to add their eighth title, losing their first game to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, leaves the big question in the mind of fans…’can the Pharaohs recover from that  painful ‘bite’ from the Super Eagles”?
With 25 AFCON appearances and 7 titles, The Pharaohs can boast of Key players like Mo Salah, Trézéguet, Omar Marmoush and more.
