The Benefits of Wearing a Seat Belt

Depending on when you were born, you may recall not being required to wear a seat belt or even being confined to the back seat as a child. Despite the fact that seat belts became mandatory equipment in vehicles in the late 1960s, there were no seat belt laws requiring drivers and passengers to wear them. These laws did not take effect until the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Wearing a seat belt should now be second nature and a natural driving habit every time you get into your vehicle. Even so, some people do not see the value in wearing their seat belts. They are actually putting themselves in greater danger because the vehicle’s safety systems will not protect them in the event of an accident.

What are the benefits of using a seat belt?

It protects everyone in the vehicle as well as other drivers. Seat belts save lives, and this has been proven in numerous studies and research, even if you have an older model vehicle without airbags.

Maintains your position during impacts. The seat belt keeps you in your seat and prevents you from being thrown through the windshield or thrown around in the vehicle. Most people are unaware that the G-forces produced during collisions place significant strain on the body and result in more serious injuries when seat belts are not worn.

It is intended to work in conjunction with your airbags. Airbags, along with your seat belt, are intended to help keep you in place. The airbag system is ineffective if you are not wearing it.

This prevents you from receiving a fine for not wearing one. As previously stated, seat belt laws exist, and if you are caught not wearing one, you may be issued a traffic ticket, fined, and have the violation recorded on your driving record.

Reduces the chances of serious injury or death. People have survived major accidents in which their cars were totaled, but they only suffered minor injuries because they were wearing their seat belts. They could have been seriously injured or, worse, killed if they hadn’t.

Influences auto insurance rates. If you refuse to wear your seat belt and receive traffic tickets as a result, your auto insurance rates may skyrocket because you are considered a high-risk driver, and your policy may be canceled.

Prevents your auto insurance from refusing to cover damages in the event of an accident because you were not wearing a seat belt. If you are involved in an accident, regardless of fault, your insurance policy may contain a provision stating that you will not be reimbursed for any damages, personal injury and vehicle damage, if you were not wearing your seat belt.
