1. Date for reopening of basic schools should be communicated by GES immediately:
One of the major problems which currently needs an urgent address is the reopening date of public basic schools in Ghana. Basic school teachers in Ghana do not know exactly when Public Basic Schools will reopen. On Monday 10th January 2022, Private Basic schools have reopened yet there is no official date from GES on when basic schools will be reopened.
2. Replacement of the 44,000 teachers who left the basic school in 2021:
EMIS Provisional data made available reveals that 44,000 teachers out of 284,000 Basic school teachers left the teaching profession in 2021 without any replacement. This is 15%, the highest in 20 years. Why did they walk away from the classroom, and how soon will they be replaced?
Although government is set to recruit 16,000 teachers but it’s likely that it can’t feel the gap.
3. Capitation Grant should be released:
Another major concern that needs to be addressed is the issue of capitation Grant which is in arrears for Four Branches (2 each for 2019/2020 & 2020/2021 academic years). And because of this, Headteachers borrowed in order to keep the schools running because that’s the only source of income for Basic schools. When will the arrears be paid?
4. Supply of text books to Basic Schools:
Lastly, there are no textbooks in our Public Basic schools two years after the implementation of the new Standards-Based Curriculum. With the Junior High School teachers set to undergo training for the common core program tomorrow (13th January 2022), the question we ask is are the text books for the new curriculum ready for them?
