We are often so preoccupied with our current activities that we forget to reflect on our old days, the things we have done, and the music and movies we enjoyed when we were younger.
Mr. Kelly’s conviction marked a stunning fall for a man who was once one of the biggest names in R&B music. One of my favourite foreign musicians as a kid was R-Kelly. It wasn’t just his black race that endeared him to me; his voice and songwriting were also top-notch. Songs like “Storm is Over,” “If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time,” and “I Believe I Can Fly” were all inspired by classics.
A nasty scandal has tarnished Kelly’s reputation as one of the most popular and talented artists of his time. When I think of Kelly’s 55th birthday today, I go back to when 1 cedis could buy me a cool drink and food to scribble down the lyrics to my favorite songs. He has fallen from grace to grass. He was married, wealthy can’t say what prompted him to force women to bed without their consent and took advantage of underaged girls.
I’ve come to realize that even if something is done in secret, it will eventually be made public. If R-Kelly hadn’t gotten himself embroiled in the incident that placed him in jail, I’m sure he’d still be putting out wonderful music.
This year, in May 2022, R-Kelly will be sentenced to 10 years to life in prison. Although R-Kelly maintains that he is innocent, many supporters are certain that he has been wrongfully accused and should be set free. Though he pleaded guilty to all the sexual counts charged against him. Do you think he deserves a second chance and should be released?
