Six months old baby found in a dustbin at Adjen Kotoku near Accra

Veronica Boani was going to deposit a plastic full of waste into her front yard dustbin when she had the surprise of her life. The dustbin which is stationed in front of Veronica’s house has been used by an unknown mother as a refuge home for a six-month-old baby. 

The baby which is yet to be identified, was asleep when Veronica found it. Initially, I did not see the baby. I was in a hurry so I didn’t even look into the dustbin. I just opened it and placed the plastic waste into it without looking at the in it. 

I have been doing it every day so it wasn’t new to me. The only time I look into the dustbin is when the refuse collectors have emptied the bin. With that one, I pick the bin to wash it and that is the only time I usually look into the bin, Veronica narrated to the Kotoku Police after the unidentified baby was found. 

The baby which was sleeping in the dustbin started crying when Veronica placed the rubber waste polythene on it. Veronica became alert of herself after hearing the sound of the baby. Veronica had thought a nursing mother was passing by when the baby started crying but there was no one around. 

The cries were faint so I thought somebody, a nursing mother was coming closer with her baby but there was no one. I was about to open the doors back to my house when something tickled me to check the dustbin. 

The rubber waste I had placed in the dustbin had covered the face of the baby-making the cries faint. The cries were loud after I removed the rubber waste and that was when I found out, somebody has blessed me. I wasn’t mad and never cursed the mother. 

It is my blessings to be a mother again at 42, so I called the police before making arrangements for the baby. We have taken her to the hospital and she is receiving treatment, Veronica added. 

Kotoku Police have begun investigations into how a six months old baby landed in a dustbin at Lamteh II, a residential area in Adjen Kotoku. The baby, a she, is doing well at the Nsawam hospital after Veronica took her to the hospital for checks. 

Veronica Boani, 42, and a mother of three youthful children have already taken full cost of the baby’s hospital bills and has even decided to make the baby her own if the original mother doesn’t want it. I am going to make her my number four. I already have 3 grown-ups and can manage a fourth one in addition. 

I am just grateful God gave her to me. There are a lot of people in this area, but the mother decided to dump her in my dustbin and that is something I will thank God for it, Veronica said.
