I’m not happy’ – 27-year-old Mobile Money vendor arrested for attempting to commit suicide at Dunkwa

Residents of Ahinta, a residential community within Dunkwa-on-Offin, were busy preparing for the day’s activities when they heard a loud sound. The sound which had erupted from the Nkrumo’s uncompleted estate buildings was the first sound from Obeng Seth; a 27-year-old mobile money vendor. 

Obeng had tried to take his own life on a first attempt but had failed when the rope he used became loose. The piece of cloth Obeng had torn from his bedsheets, was used to tie a wooden frame in the Nkrumo’s uncompleted estatee building but Obeng was unsuccessful as the cloth became loose.

Obeng fell from the first floor of the building to the down floor making a heavy sound. The sound from Obeng’s failed suicide attempt was heard by residents of Ahinta, but none took it seriously until an aged woman drew the attention of her children. 

Nana Hemaa as she is famously called in the Ahinta community, called her children and instructed them to check the Nkrumo’s uncompleted building. There had been robbery lately in that building, check and see if the robbers are back to steal the building materials again, Nana Hemaa instructed her children.

Stephen Danso, the first to witness the second attempt of Obeng Seth in trying to commit suicide, raised alarm and within seconds, the entire community was on its toes begging Obeng to slow down on life. Dunkwa-on-Offin police within minutes had arrived on the crime scenes after residents had called on them of Obeng’s intentions to commit suicide. 

The police, through the intervention of Nana Hemaa, was able to talk to Obeng before he gave up on his suicide mission. Obeng after his arrest was taken to the Dunkwa-on-Offin police station where the police are helping him recover from his ordeals. Corporal Jojo Marcus, explained that it was for the sake of safety concerns that lead to Obeng’s arrested.

It is for his own good. Arresting him will stop him from attempting to commit another suicide and besides, any attempts to take ones own life is a crime and we are hoping to give him recovery, the officer said after the arrest. 

Obeng at the police station had confessed to having been fed up with life and that pushed him to attempt taking his life. Everything I do ends up bad for me. I have incurred over ¢5,000 of debt with my mobile money job, and anything I do isn’t working for me. I am not happy with life and wanted to end it, Obeng Seth said to the police after his rescue. 

Obeng is doing well and is been taken care of, by the Dunkwa-on-Offin police command until he is ready to face his crimes. He will be prosecuted after his emotional recovery, the police hinted.
