Agah was arrested by the police for using the name of former President John Dramani Mahama to dupe unsuspecting businessman.
According to Chief Superintendent Kofi Blagodzi, Ashanti Regional Head of Legal and Prosecution of Ghana Police Service, the accused person was arrested by the police in Kumasi on December 12, 2021, based upon a tip off.
He told a Kumasi based circuit court presided by Jacqueline Avotri that the police received information that Gabriel Agah had collected Ghc 50,000 from one Nana Opoku Agyemang, a businessman with the promise of giving hims a landed property worth GHC 150,000. He said the fraudsater was going for additional Ghc100, 000, when the police arrested him.
The police added that the accused started by opened several social media accounts with the name and pictures of John Dramani Mahama and pretended to be the former president. He lured people to pay money to him with a promise to get them a landed properties houses and parcels of land.
In the specific matter that got him arrested, the police said after Nana Agyemang made the initial payment, the fake John Mahama asked for the remaining GHC 100,000 before the said property is released. The business man demanded to meet the supposed John Mahama before the payment is made. This was initially agreed to by Agah. However the supposed John Mahama (Gabriel Agah) told the Nana Opoku later that his schedule was so tight that he couldn’ t meet him in person. He told the man he was sending one of his aides to meet him and this was agreed to by the businessman.
However, the businessman went with police who arrested Gabriel Agah and brought him to justice.
The court after hearing the plea of Gabriel Agah granted him to a Ghc 100,000 bail with three sureties, one of which should be justified with a landed property.
This was after the prosecution had made a plea to the court to remand the accused person to give the police more space to complete their investigations.
