An English Catholic historian, politician, and writer John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton is best known for his remark, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” It seems relinquishing power to a political opponent or an incoming presidential candidate is the hardest thing for most African leaders to do.
Several African countries have suffered internal conflicts as a result of the unwillingness of the President to hand over power peacefully. Several innocent people have lost their lives from issues they know nothing of, and the United Nations has provided a great number of resources in maintaining peace.
These monies could have been channeled into developmental activities to develop the continent. However, violence from political unrest which is mostly due to the greed of politicians has caused this great loss. In addition, the number of soldiers who have lost their lives is uncountable and it creates a bad impression in the eyes of the developed world.
Guinea has suffered from political turmoil for some time now and it has been four months since the country’s President Alpha Conde was deposed. A special force soldier by name of Mamady Doumbouya led some group of soldiers to overthrow the president and he is currently the interim head of the transition. It has been the wish of a lot of Guineans for the transition to indicate when they will hand over power but that hasn’t been the case.
A top Reggae musician, Tiken Jah Fakoly who is very famous and has made an impact with his songs has also added his voice to the many demanding answers from the government. Since the transition hasn’t declared when it will hand over power, he has asked them to “stay for three years, organize elections and leave power.”
