The Bible states that “to everything that has a beginning, there is surely an end.” This statement means that no matter how powerful one becomes, his time to retire or exit will come. However, the circumstances which will lead to the downfall of a person remain a mystery and whether it will be betrayal or not it is unpredictable.
Who could have thought that Doumbouya who was promoted in quick succession to the rank of colonel by Alpha Conde would stage a coup against him? How on earth would a trusted soldier who was chosen by the President to head the protection team which he had created, capture his boss and imprison him?
The news of the coup came as a big surprise to many in the early hours of September 5th, 2021. Heavy gunfire was heard in the streets of the capital, Conakry with several soldiers patrolling the streets. An announcement which was later made by the army chief on tv seemed to suggest that the uprising had been quelled.Â
It later became known when the coup leader Doumbouya, appeared on national television that the President had been apprehended and sent to an unknown location. This was a successful coup and the coup leader cited corruption and abuse of power among other factors as his reason for staging the coup. Scores of Guineans march through the streets in a joyful manner to celebrate the overthrow of the octogenarian President.
Alpha Conde was seen as an autocratic leader when he altered the Constitution to run for a third term. He was persuaded to sign his resignation which he refused and insisted that he is the legitimate President.Â
Fast forward, Doumbouya has granted the former President to be sent outside the country for treatment. It seems the deposed President is not retiring anytime soon. Will he be reinstated as President and will Doumbouya agree to that?
